Cities with high racial economic inequality and widespread poverty increase police force size

Aug 08, 2013

Commentary on the trial of George Zimmerman for the killing of Trayvon Martin highlighted some Americans' perception of the influence of race and class on law enforcement in the United States. University of Missouri sociologists recently documented the influence of racial division and economic inequality on the size of a city's police force. Understanding the dynamic relationship among race, economic inequality and the criminal justice system can help America's leaders design policies that increase individuals' security while ensuring justice for all. Crime reporters can use this study's results to give nuance to their reporting, according to the MU researchers.

"Municipal governments can use our research to inform policies that reduce inequalities in cities, which may subsequently reduce the expense of increasing the size of their police forces," said co-lead author Guðmundur Oddsson, PhD candidate in sociology in MU's College of Arts and Science. "Journalists can learn from our study that crime reporting needs to include the social and economic context of and social control and thereby tell more complex stories, as opposed to episodic tales of brutality and greed."

Oddsson and his colleagues examined data from 64 American cities with populations of more than 250,000. They found evidence that cities tend to increase the size of their police force when high levels of poverty exist along with greater economic inequality between racial groups. When levels of racial and are low or when levels of poverty are low, cities do not increase their as much as metropolitan areas where citizens perceive greater threats resulting from a combination of large inequalities and severe poverty.

"People tend to blame either race or poverty for crime and the subsequent growth of the police force, but our study suggests that race and class inequality intertwine to influence police force size," said study co-lead author Andrew Fisher, sociology doctoral student in MU's College of Arts and Science. "Importantly, our study grants support to the theory that the police mainly protect the interests of dominant groups, that is, whites and the affluent. Because it brews discontent, a combination of economic disparities between and widespread poverty is likely to be understood as a serious threat to dominant groups and that enhances the pressure on city governments to increase police force strength."

So take away welfare and stop paying people to fail in life. Then they will have to get some kind of job and have less time to make trouble. Keep them busy. Eliminating the minimum wage would start a lot of job openings too.

Importantly, our study grants support to the theory that the police mainly protect the interests of dominant groups, that is, whites and the affluent.

The affluent are the ones who pay most of the taxes and most law abiding so their interests should be served.

Journalists can learn from our study that crime reporting needs to include the social and economic context of criminal behavior

In other words, left wing 'journalists' are expected to be in the business of excuse making and obfuscation of facts. Ignoring the self inflicted genecide in places like Chicago, by in effect clouding it with 'victimization' has been proven a failed policy of the idiot left.

Liberals are too stupid to understand it is exactly this, perpetuation of the victim culture, which results in disproportionately high crime rate amongst young black males. Liberals expose their implicit racism by excuse making and lowering the bar of acceptable behavior on racial lines.

Whenever police presence increases in black communities to a proportion appropriate for the crime rate, the fraudulent liberal race hustlers campaign against it, claiming "profiling". The police are then pressured to back off because of the politics, then the cycle continues.

'Stand your ground' law in Florida was likewise attacked by the race hustlers on the eve of the Zimmerman trial, even though more blacks make use of that law than whites, and despite the fact that the law was not even relevant in the trial.

@CapitalismPrevails: the problem is that the US has an inflated cost of living. In normal circumstances cutting the minimum wage would definitely increase employment. But in the US, basic items are sufficiently expensive that many people get a better payoff by staying unemployed, and either working informally (favor-trading) or focusing on supporting members of their family who *do* work.

Minimum wage reduction could improve employment, don't get me wrong, but dropping it entirely all at once would just drive more people into the grey market and informal services, rather than into highly productive employment.

Also, it's important to note that most of the 18% (http://www.cbpp.o...;id=3505 ) who get more value in services than they pay in taxes don't get that through welfare. Abuse of the disability system costs us a lot more than Medicaid and food stamps do.

BS. Your study does not attempt to understand why young black males are ten times more likely to murder, than hispanics and whites combined, nor how it is that liberal "diversity" is a fraud.

What occurs is that decent people move OUT of communities that develop a degenerate culture and into high crime. What remains is a low class thuggish subculture with a high crime rate, ....not victims of 'economic inequality' or discrimination. That is yet another liberal fallacy. Such issues are self inflicted.

...

Lack of diversity occurs as a migration based on a NATURAL REACTION, a natural instinct which everyone has a right to.

What the "progressive left" want is to obfuscate the above facts to justify social engineering. They will attempt artificial and coercive policies that are counter to what a free natural reaction would be, to force diversity into existence where it is unnatural to.

This is despite the fact that it is those who are perpetually labeled as victims that are the ones who do not assimulate, and drive off the middle class, resulting in self-inflicted lack of diversity.

Take away welfare and they'll figure out some other way to survive. More violent crime. Lots more social discontent too. Riots. Domestic terrorism. You'll end up building walls, either around your 'burb, or around the poor. Good way to create a dystopia.

The affluent are the ones who pay most of the taxes and most law abiding so their interests should be served.

Uhh - no. You don't understand "enforce the law", and "public safety". What you describe is private militia.

Is that the reason we have welfare, because we are being black mailed into it by criminals? The problem with liberal big government mentality is that it is reactionary in just that way. Anyway, I think you miss the point. Welfare and disability claims are at crises levels now.

Generations of government dependency, a constant barrage of "you're a victim of American institutionalized racism", the perpetual victimization culture, implicit racism of liberals in lowering the bar of expectations, ... all leads to degeneracy and disproportionate crime rate.

Liberals will never admit that their policy of perpetual victimization is a failed one and is itself implicitly racist. They won't admit that the black separatist subculture's with its abject breakdown of the family unit, is a failed one, that assimulation and personal accountability is the key.

The liberal obama administration is going to try to use the Department of Housing and Urban Development as a social engineering tool to artifically impose diversity.

Liberal socialist engineers are not interested in studies of why lack of diversity occurs, nor that it is typically minorities who do not assimilate, and wy they have their own subculture. They do not study why the middle class migrate AWAY from the degenerate lower class, and that such a natural reaction is NOT racism.

Liberals expect diversity all the while inciting race tensions.

Their aim is to prevent decent people (of all races) from escaping low class degenerate subcultures, because that would dilute the problems their policies have resoundingly failed to solve, in fact, caused.
