Census: Whites no longer a majority in US by 2043

Dec 12, 2012 by Hope Yen

White people will no longer make up a majority of Americans by 2043, according to new census projections. That's part of a historic shift that already is reshaping the nation's schools, workforce and electorate, and is redefining long-held notions of race.

The official projection, released Wednesday by the Census Bureau, now places the tipping point for the white majority a year later than previous estimates, which were made before the impact of the recent was fully known.

America continues to grow and become more diverse due to higher birth rates among minorities, particularly for Hispanics who entered the U.S. at the height of the immigration boom in the 1990s and early 2000s. Since the mid-2000 housing bust, however, the arrival of millions of new immigrants from Mexico and other nations has slowed from its once-torrid pace.

The country's changing demographic mosaic has stark , shown clearly in last month's election that gave President a second term—in no small part due to his support from 78 percent of non-white voters.

There are social and economic ramifications, as well. Longstanding fights over civil rights and racial equality are going in new directions, promising to reshape race relations and common notions of being a "minority." White plaintiffs now before the Supreme Court argue that special protections for racial and ethnic minorities dating back to the 1960s may no longer be needed, from affirmative action in college admissions to the Voting Rights Act, designed for states with a history of disenfranchising blacks.

has eased and intermarriage for first- and second-generation Hispanics and Asians is on the rise, blurring racial and ethnic lines and lifting the numbers of people who identify as multiracial. Unpublished 2010 show that millions of people shunned standard race categories such as black or white on government forms, opting to write in their own cultural or individual identities.

By 2060, multiracial people are projected to more than triple, from 7.5 million to 26.7 million—rising even faster and rendering notions of race labels increasingly irrelevant, experts say, if lingering stigma over being mixed-race can fully fade.

The non-Hispanic white , now at 197.8 million, is projected to peak at 200 million in 2024, before entering a steady decline in absolute numbers as the massive baby boomer generation enters its golden years. Four years after that, racial and ethnic minorities will become a majority among adults 18-29 and wield an even greater impact on the "youth vote" in presidential elections, census projects.

"The fast-growing demographic today is now the children of immigrants," said Marcelo Suarez-Orozco, a global expert on immigration and dean of UCLA's Graduate School of Education & Information Studies, describing the rate of minority growth in the U.S. as dipping from "overdrive" to "drive." Even with slowing immigration, Suarez-Orozco says, the "die has been cast" for strong minority growth from births.

As recently as 1960, whites made up 85 percent of the U.S., but that share has steadily dropped after a 1965 overhaul of U.S. immigration laws opened doors to waves of new immigrants from Mexico, Latin America and Asia. By 2000, the percentage of U.S. whites had slid to 69 percent; it now stands at nearly 64 percent.

"Moving forward, the U.S. will become the first major post-industrial society in the world where minorities will be the majority," Suarez-Orozco said. With the white baby boomer population now leaving the workforce, the big challenge will be educating the new immigrants, he said.

The U.S. has nearly 315 million people today. According to the projections released Wednesday, the U.S. population is projected to cross the 400 million mark in 2051, 12 years later than previously projected. The population will hit 420.3 million a half century from now in 2060.

By then, whites will drop to 43 percent of the U.S. Blacks will make up 14.7 percent, up slightly from today. Hispanics, currently 17 percent of the population, will more than double in absolute number, making up 31 percent, or nearly 1 in 3 residents, according to the projections. Asians are expected to increase from 5 percent of the population to 8 percent.

Among children, the point when minorities become the majority is expected to arrive much sooner, by 2018 or so. Last year, racial and ethnic minorities became a majority among babies under age 1 for the first time in U.S. history.

At the same time, the U.S. population as a whole is aging, driven by 78 million mostly white baby boomers born between 1946 and 1964. By 2030, roughly 1 in 5 residents will be 65 and older. Over the next half century, the "oldest old"—those ages 85 and older—will more than triple to 18.2 million, reaching 4 percent of the U.S. population.

The actual shift in demographics will be shaped by a host of factors that can't always be accurately pinpointed—the pace of the economic recovery, cultural changes, natural or manmade disasters, as well as an overhaul of immigration law, which is expected to be debated in Congress early next year.

"The next half century marks key points in continuing trends—the U.S. will become a plurality nation, where the non-Hispanic white population remains the largest single group, but no group is in the majority," said acting Director Thomas Mesenbourg.

Republicans have been seeking to broaden their appeal to minorities, who made up 28 percent of the electorate this year, after faring poorly among non-whites on the Nov. 6 Election Day, when Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney carried only about 20 percent of non-white votes.

The race and ethnic changes are already seen in pockets of the U.S. and in the younger age groups, where roughly 45 percent of all students in K-12 are Hispanics, blacks, Asian-Americans and others. Already, the District of Columbia and four states—Hawaii, California, New Mexico and Texas—have minority populations greater than 50 percent; across the U.S., more than 11 percent of counties have tipped to "majority-minority" status.

Last month, nearly all voters over age 65 were white (87 percent), but among voters under age 30, just 58 percent were white.

"Irrespective of future immigration and minority fertility patterns, the U.S. is facing a stagnating white population," said William H. Frey, a demographer at the Brookings Institution. "The biggest shift will occur over the next 20 years as the mostly white baby boom generation moves into traditional retirement years. It is in the child and early labor force ages where we must be ready for the greatest changes as new American minorities take over for aging whites."

Economically, the rapidly growing non-white population gives the U.S. an advantage over other developed nations, including Russia, Japan and France, which are seeing reduced growth or population losses due to declining and limited immigration. The combined population of more-developed countries other than the U.S. has been projected to decline beginning in 2016, raising the prospect of prolonged budget crises as the number of working-age citizens diminish, pension costs rise and tax revenues fall.

Depending on future rates of immigration, the U.S. population is estimated to continue growing through at least 2060. In a hypothetical situation in which all immigration—both legal and illegal—immediately stopped, previous government estimates have suggested the U.S. could lose population beginning in 2048.

"Young families—many of them first or second-generation immigrants—have been the engine of U.S. population growth for several decades," said Mark Mather, associate vice president of the Population Reference Bureau.

Just because whitey becomes a minority doesn't mean he will no longer be blamed for all the problems of the world.

I thought it was a good idea when Hispanics wanted to form their own chambers of commerce 30 years ago, thinking they could then quit blaming whitey for their problems - turns out that whitey still gets the blame.

I can see it all now. In the new central U.S. desert, hoards of White Tea Baggers will be hold up in ammunition filled, bunkers below the desert, breeding with their daughters and first cousins to keep their white American race pure for the return of their white God - "Jeebsuz".

Jeebsuz they will proclaim will arrive any day now, and certainly within a few short years, and save Christian America from the Evil Minorities that have poisoned it's racial purity, and Uncle Sam's precious bodily fluids.

Of course, like the present day Baggers, these predictions will be forgotten every year during a celebration that involves binge drinking, only to be replaced by the same prediction with an ending date one year later.

No such thing as racist Conservatives. There's only the racist and bigoted Liberals/Socialists who think that Blacks don't know anything else but picking cotton, popping out babies, smoking weed, and feeling up White girls.

Liberals have a violent reaction upon hearing Conservatives ask why should Blacks (and Hispanics) be treated differently than Whites as to learning self-reliance and responsibility, and having a work ethic among others. Liberals rant about how Conservatives want to send Blacks to the plantation, and we ask, "What plantation?"
It's been proven that racist Liberals are responsible for the misery of Blacks. Success is not an option.

The authors make the usual mistake: the fail to take into account fast breeding minorities within the segments. Amish, for instance, are white and extremely prolific. Religiousness is partly genetically predetermined and correlated to higher reproductive rate.

This means that the future belongs to religious people, and that the over all reproductive rate will be mainly determined by these high-fertility sub groups. Will they be black, white or hispanic? Well, the data at hand tells us nothing.. Extrapolating from the current curves of white/black/hispanic without taking into account prolific sub populations is just plain stupid.

Do you care at all about facts hb? I just linked to an article that shows the U.S. is becoming less and less religious. Take a look at Europe - the poor Catholics don't know what to do with all the empty churches. Youth are significantly less religious than the older generations. Marx talked about creeping socialism. He should really have talked about creeping atheism Large family size is much more tied to economics. All the data shows that if you address poverty - family size drops. You see - educational level correlates with atheism - so the more educated we make the world - the less problems we have with religion, and at some point the population stabilizes - win, win, win.

So who are the racist homophobes?

As for US society not being "white" in the future, most people of mixed race marry into one race or the other & their descendants identify with that race (Obama for example). In a majority of cases it is the majority race that most biracial ppl gravitate towards. This means that increasing interracial mating increases the "white" population. Moreover, an assimilation of a biracial person into the majority population has less genetic effect on that race than an assimilation into the minority. Races are not like pigments which mix evenly. They are a frequency of genes. America will be white with more non-white ancestors than before. Maybe more white. Sorry triumphalists.

"Why would a feminist attack and condemn other women who are successful?" - RyggTard

Her objection is clearly expressed in paragraph 2. It doesn't involve or mention money so that is why you - as a money grubber - are unable to comprehend it's meaning.

"Despite the passage of time since second-wave feminism erupted in the late 1960s, we've somehow been thrown back to the demure girly-girl days of the white-bread 1950s. It feels positively nightmarish to survivors like me of that rigidly conformist and man-pleasing era, when girls had to be simple, peppy, cheerful and modest. Doris Day, Debbie Reynolds and Sandra Dee formed the national template -- that trinity of blond oppressors!" - Paglia

I would say a confused individual with no standards, a 'liberal' is a more apt description. NOT a libertarian as you asserted.

It's interesting to watch socialists deny their Fascists brothers. It was so easy for the NAZIs to gain power because Germany was already very socialist. The creator Fascism proclaimed his socialist roots.
Socialism is govt control of the individual and his property. What difference does it make how the leadership is chosen?

Rygg - "What traditional social institution don't you like dj?"

For starters - religion, government, schools, corporations, - really anything that has a hierarchical structure - and restricts the freedom of the individual in terms of the emancipation of the mind.

"Do you support honoring and respecting your parents and elders?" Only if they earn that respect by showing respect to the autonomy of others.

"Do you want to steal the property of others and do you covet your neighbors property and spouse?" No to the first question - the second one is stupid - If my neighbor's wife is attractive - of course I find her attractive.

"Do you think children do best when a father and mother raise the children?"

Not necessarily - many parents are cruel and abusive. I think children do best when loved - and the emancipation of their mind is the primary goal of their caregivers (straight or gay).

"Do you support murder?" Of course not - I am totally opposed to the death penalty.

Do you not believe in biological evolution?

As to what is wrong with social institutions - that is a complex question - I would say the primary problem is patriarchy - the willingness of selfish people to promote their own privilege OVER the freedom of others. This of course is a highly complex question. It seems that institutions almost always become corrupted by the privilege they confer on the insiders OVER the outsiders. I don't have a solution to what is probably the central problem of our world. "Since the stable married family is a fortress of private life and individuality, its retreat will mean the opposite of that: more state interference and surveillance, more conformism – and more conformists – and mass culture. Its main effect will be on the children.

Many of them will grow up outside what used to be normal, a lifelong two-parent home.

They will, as a result, be different sorts of people. Already, almost half of Britain's 15-year-olds do not live with their 'birth parents'; 300,000 sets of parents split each year.

My point is that one of the pre-requisites of a functional democracy - is a well educated populace. Why do you think there is so much child abuse here in Oklahoma. So many tragic stories of parents who were spaced out on meth - and burned their trailer down and killed all of their kids? It is because many in the culture are very uneducated - and don't have a high level of control in their lives. Complexity is overrated. The fundamental logic behind the computers we are using is 1 and 0. Quite simple.

Regarding social evolution, there is a tremendous store of literature (Greek tragedies and the Bible for example) which show that fundamental social traditions have changed little because they have been successful at perpetuating the species.

It's quite apparent that living things adapt to their environment to survive. I am still waiting for science to turn inert chemicals into a living organism and I have yet to find a satisfactory answer to how new species begin from the old.

Sweden has vouchers.
It's not really that complicated, that complex, IF you are willing to get out of the govt box.

I know union teachers despise charters in AZ. The local middle school teachers were complaining about a charter taking money out of their school.

In polygamist cultures a stable family has many husbands or wives.
In some native cultures there is no strict concept of husband or wife, and the entire band acts as an extended family to advance the interests of the entire band.

You have to ask yourself if RyggTard, time after time after time, continues to miss the parts of his own references that contradict his own position or if the only style of argument he knows is to dishonestly misrepresent the words of others by taking them out of context.

I am not sure that all Libertarians are liars - I believe it is an honestly held world view - and I believe has some merit (minimal government - high levels of autonomy). However - I do agree with your characterization of the state of the American culture - and I think any democratic system requires a well educated populace. Stubborn ideology of any kind blinds us to logical errors - it is like invisibility glasses or something. The frustrating thing with someone like Rygg - is that you can point out the errors - and he/she will ignore them - and move right on to spam the next article with more ideology. But reasoning is a waste of time - so back to lurking - sigh....

A perfect example of the issue - on another thread - Rygg accused the scientific community of excommunicating Pons and Fleishman over the cold fusion episode - implying that their was this big conspiracy against any dissent in the physics community. Of course dissent is a critical part of the science process. So I point out to Rygg that the problem was that pons/Fleishman made grand claims, but never produced results that could be validated. So of course they were told to either put up or shut up - that is science. No response from Rygg regarding a really outrageous - conspiracy theory.

Of course dissent is a critical part of the science process.

Not for AGW. Critics are excommunicated. Kuhn describes the process quite well.
As for P-F, their work continues.
Ever hear of h pylori?
"Barry Marshall also intentionally consumed helicobacter pylori to support the hypothesis made. He became infected with the bacterium, suffered from symtoms but was relieved from the symtoms by use of antibiotics."

Rygg - "As for P-F, their work continues."

Rygg's child like inability to understand even very obvious facts is amazing.

Fleischman is dead - and here is an interesting summation of where cold fusion is today.

http://www.nytime...amp;_r=0

"Dr. Fleischmann ultimately acknowledged that his data was slippery and his secrecy counterproductive. But he still believed that fusion, or something like it, remained mankind's best hope."

Cold fusion may one day prove out - I hope so - the point is that Rygg maintains a conspiracy of scientists against these poor dissenters from the religion - when the reality is their experiment did not work - they were shoddy, attention seeking researchers - who were exposed for their carelessness. Rygg continues to support junk science. Read Vendi's discussion above regarding the sad state of thinking among Americans such as Rygg

I know how new dog breeds are created or new cattle breeds. Usually incest is involved to bring out the specific traits desired.
Do you find this offensive? Do you think the dogs find this offensive? Is this against ypur particular sect or coven? Do remember that humans were created with an intrinsic knowledge of husbandry. Per your book.
But these are the same species.
Similar species that interbreed typically are sterile, like a mule.
If a new species is the result of some random mutation that random mutant needs to find another random mutant to mate and perpetuate the species. Not impossible and based on data, it must occur but has this been observed?
Ahahaahaaa ryggy is trying to do evolution. Why don't you just look it up? Try the INTERNET.

That's actually a rather pleasant sentiment. As in 'He shall make the dogs to lie down in green pastures' or 'the dog shall lie with the lamb.'

Hey rygg did you know I was once a WOLF? No shit-

I agree completely. Fools can only govern themselves foolishly.

"I think any democratic system requires a well educated populace." - dir

"But reasoning is a waste of time - so back to lurking - sigh...." - dir

Reasoning peppered with ridicule, and illustrating the lies. That is all a moral, thinking person can do until the rioting begins.

Then the throat slitting begins.

RyggTard is a non-thinker. If he can't regurgitate a canned response composed by someone else, he is lost and will not respond.

RyggTard is a follower. He can not initiate new ideas due to his limited intellect.

How true!

"We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion. Avarice, ambition, revenge, or gallantry would break the strongest cords of our Constitution as a whale goes through a net. Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other."

– John Adams, letter to the Officers of the First Brigade of the Third Division of the Militia of Massachusetts, October 11, 1798; Works 9:228–229

Of all the systems of religion that ever were invented, there is no more derogatory to the Almighty, more unedifiying to man, more repugnant to reason, and more contradictory to itself than this thing called Christianity. Too absurd for belief, too impossible to convince, and too inconsistent for practice, t renders the heart torpid or produces only atheists or fanatics. As an engine of power, it serves the purpose of despotism, and as ameans of wealth, the avarice of priests, but so far as respects the good of man in general it leads to nothing here or hereafter. Leftist say all Tea Partiers (who they call Teabaggers as a homophobic slur) are white racist and yet when shown pics of Tea Party rallies with non whites and non-white Tea Party activists they quickly call them the N word & "Uncle Toms" (betraying their ignorance of the character). So who are the racist homophobes?
-SeanWillfully-ignorant

Halfway down the Tea party wikipedia page: "The term teabagger was initially used to refer to Tea Partiers after conservatives used tea bag as a verb on protest signs and websites. Members of the movement initially adopted the term, and referred to themselves as teabaggers... ...Conservatives initially embraced the term, and some have since advocated that the non-vulgar meaning of the word be reclaimed." They've done it to them selves, idiot. As for the rest of the quoted drivel: LIAR! Leftists tend to use perjoratives accurately and in context, like so ==> SeanW = Twat-waffle.

No need to thank me, I'm only here to help. <3 <3 =^-^=

"The sad truth is that being black in America still automatically places you in a box. Yes, there is rapid growth in America's minority population. Yes the President is black.

But as Parker suggested, some black Americans still think they have to act, speak and behave in a certain way that conforms to the identity that a white, liberal media has created.

In this perverse racial order, you simply cannot be authentically black if you are conservative – politically or culturally.
