Samsung launches new oversized smartphone

Samsung launched Wednesday the newest version of its oversized smartphone Galaxy Note, just a week after Apple's iPhone 5 hit shelves, in an apparent bid to outpace its rival with a wider range of gadgets.

Samsung launched Wednesday the newest version of its oversized smartphone Galaxy Note, just a week after Apple's iPhone 5 hit shelves, in an apparent bid to outpace its rival with a wider range of gadgets.

The South Korean electronics giant said the Galaxy Note II—first unveiled at a trade fair in Berlin last month—will eventually hit stores in 128 nations including the United States, where the firm's recently lost a $1.05 billion patent case to Apple.

The gadget is slightly bigger than the firm's flagship smartphone Galaxy S series and comes with a stylus "S pen" to write notes or draw on the screen.

"We believe of Galaxy Note II for the first three months will be more than three times those of the previous version," J.K. Shin, the head of ' mobile unit, told reporters.

The world's top smartphone maker has sold more than 10 million units of the first Galaxy Note since its debut in November and more than 20 million of the latest Galaxy S III, which was launched in late May.

J.K. Shin, head of Samsung's mobile unit, poses with the Galaxy Note II in Seoul on September 26. "We believe global sales of Galaxy Note II for the first three months will be more than three times those of the previous version," he said.

"It took us some time to establish this new product category in the ... but now we get far better response than the past," Shin said.

The launch comes after a flurry of new devices from major phone makers including Apple, whose just days ago enjoyed a record launch weekend with sales topping five million.

Samsung's smaller rival LG Electronics last week put on sale the new version of its headline Optimus G, hopes it will help the world's number five phonemaker meet its goal to sell 80 million mobile phones this year.

Galaxy Note II—powered by 's software—is equipped with a new 1.6 GHz quad-core processor that helps run multiple applications faster than the dual-core processor of the previous version.

About 15.1 centimetres long (5.9 inches), 8 centimetres wide, 9.4 millimetres thin and featuring a 5.5-inch , it allows users to split the screen in half to view two programmes at once.

"You can exchange chat messages or take part in a video conference while checking e-mails, or take notes while watching a video speech by famous speakers," said Shin.

Samsung has been embroiled in a long-running patent battle with Apple in 10 countries, including the United States and Germany, with the two rivals accusing each other of stealing design and technology.

Last month the South Korean firm was ordered to pay Apple $1.05 billion in damages for illegally copying and iPad features for its Galaxy S smartphones.

That might be the best phone yet.

They should make it a few inches bigger and incorporate a tactile input mechanism that folds over the screen to act as a protective cover when the device is not in use. It could allow alphanumeric input, or the user could manipulate a token on the screen with a simple swipe of the finger. Then the screen wouldn't get soiled by fingerprints. The input mechanism housing would provide space for additional data storage capacity, a faster air-cooled CPU, a larger battery, etc. In fact, this idea is so obvious that I should patent it before someone else does!

If they didn't charge you data plans and other bullshit for service, I wouldn't mind.

You can't even activate an iPhone without paying the data plan anyway, which is a ripoff. Why would I pay a different ISP/data plan instead of just using my wireless modem?

I asked the tech that, and they said that the iPhone could not be activated without paying the data plan. I said that's bullshit, it's just a portable computer and should work on it's own.

I decided to end my iPhone service and quit paying the bill, because I'm not paying for 2 different ISPs at the same time, when all the downloading I want to do can be done through a wireless router anyway.

the whole thing is a scam.

the phone companies have taken a technology that was supposed to be liberating, and instead turned it on it's head and made a bondage out of it.

And yeah, "Illegally copying features".

Wow. All handheld devices need an interface, an on/off button, and all those "features".

The court ruling was absurd.

"Look at that, it has a GUI, a touch screen, and power button, and a USB port! They copied our technology!"

Gee, it's all standard features for all electronics.

How can anyone rule in Apple's favor in that suit, and yet they did.

I foolishly got it at AT&T with a contract...yeah.

I didn't give it much thought, but I figure I got robbed in some respects; on the monthly bill and data plan at least.

Apple ha(s/d) the ability to command adulation. Rather, Jobs had it. However, over time, the competitors aren't stupid or lame. They will catch up and do so with products that are comparable and priced well below Apples stuff.
Apple is as doomed in the smart phone arena as it is in the PC space. Jobs founded a cult and that cult will remain. But .... Jobs is dead. Even thought the current CEO mimics his dress, I seriously doubt he can maintain the cult.
