Obama leads in Michigan; many voters undecided, survey says

Sep 21, 2012

President Barack Obama holds a substantial lead in Michigan over Republican challenger Mitt Romney, although many of the state's voters remain undecided, according to Michigan State University's latest State of the State Survey.

In the quarterly survey, completed in August, the Democratic incumbent leads Romney 39 percent to 30 percent among likely voters, for a margin of 9 percentage points. The results come on the heels of an EPIC-MRA poll for the Detroit Free Press and a Detroit News/WDIV Local 4 survey that both show Obama with a commanding lead.

The MSU survey – the largest of the three – was taken before the national party conventions, at a time when 30 percent of those questioned were undecided. Republicans were more likely than Democrats to still be making up their minds, said Charles Ballard, survey director and professor of economics.

If the follow party lines, Ballard said, Obama's lead would be 49 percent to 43 percent. "These results indicate that Gov. Romney faces an uphill battle in capturing the state of his birth," said Ballard. "Michigan has not voted for a Republican presidential candidate since 1988 and the auto-industry rebound appears to favor President Obama. But the election is more than six weeks away, so there is still time for Romney to gain ground."

Among white voters, Obama and Romney are in a statistical dead heat, although Obama holds a commanding lead among black and Hispanic , Ballard said. Obama has a significant lead among both men and women. Obama leads by double digits in southeast Michigan, while Romney has a narrow lead in west Michigan.

The survey also measures approval ratings for the president and governor. In the latest survey, 41 percent give Obama a rating of "excellent" or "good." That is statistically unchanged from the previous survey.

"When first took office in 2009, Michigan residents gave him very high marks, with 71 percent saying he was doing an 'excellent' or 'good' job," Ballard said. "The president's ratings fell over the next year, however, and since early 2011 his positives have been between 40 percent and 45 percent."

Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder's approval ratings increased but still remained lower than the president's. "The governor's ratings went from 33 percent positive in the spring to 36.8 percent in the current survey," Ballard said.

When it came to how Michiganders feel about their financial situation, about 54 percent call it "excellent" or "good," Ballard said. That's the highest reading since 2005, but still below the levels recorded in the late 1990s.

About 34 percent of residents said they are better off than they were a year ago. That's down slightly from 37 percent in the previous survey, but still higher than in any other survey since 2005. Some 47 percent of survey respondents expect to be better off a year from now.

The phone survey was conducted from June 12 to Aug. 13. A total of 1,015 Michigan adults were questioned in the survey, which has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.08 percent.

MSU's State of the State has been conducted by the Institute for Public Policy and Social Research since 1994. IPPSR is a unit of MSU's College of Social Science.

OK PHYSORG, this is science news? Or just PHYSORG showing it's Progressive bias and trying to influence the election.

Why no Survey where Romney is ahead. Or discussing how polling is done by over sampling Democrats..... Many polls used by the media right now are bad. I'm supprised that Main Stream Media polls don't show Obama has the support of 98% of the population.

Why no Survey where Romney is ahead.

Is there one?

Or just PHYSORG showing it's Progressive bias and trying to influence the election.

I hardly think they need to do that.
As former Republican presidential hopeful Rick Santorum so aptly put it in a speech last week (and I quote):

"We will never have the elite, smart people on our side"

I think that says it all (and I think we can all agree with him on that wholeheartedly).

Well, Speaking of Progressives, who said ...I've now been in 57 states -- I think one left to go.... Hint, it is the same person who refuses to release his school records...

I generally dont give much mind to gafts, even for Progressives as everyone misspeaks,

But wait, which President admitted in a book he wrote to have taken cocaine?

Oh yea, then there is Biden, smart guy... want me to get quotes from him?

So progressives SAY they are smarter than Conservatives, yet more criminals, welfare recipients, rapists, drug dealers and users are democrats. On the other hand more engineers, scientists and doctors are conservatives.

I found it funny that I recieved a robo call from a polling outfit while reading this article. When I attempted to answer the first question about my choice between Obama, Romney, Other, or undecided, I selected Romney, but my phone keyboard was locked, so nothing happened. I don't know why the keyboard doesn't automatically unlock when I answer a phone call, but that is another story... In the process of unlocking it to enter my answer apparently I took too much time, and it skipped to the next question without ever getting my answer to the first. The next question then asked if my support for Obama was strong, medium, or weak. I never selected Obama yet here is the robo poll counting a timed out no-response as a vote for Obama. Oh, and I live in Michigan. At that point, I hung up. No doubt that result will be counted as a vote for Obama! LMAO! Let me guess, if noboby answers the phone that counts as a vote for Obama!

Why no Survey where Romney is ahead
Because no such place exists? Just guessing... I'm sympathetic with republicans in many aspects of their domestic politics - but Mr. Romney is simply way too much even for me. If the conservatives are able to choose such-a-person as their leader, then it just indicates, they learned nothing from the origin of existing financial crisis - or they have absolutely no control over choice of their leaders. Which is even worse...

Yes guess all you want let everyone know you aren't the brightest bulb in the drawer.

Honestly if there is one state the pollsters do not need to pad a lead for President Obama it's Michigan.

My experience is, for people at the Internet Mr. Romney is usually unpalatable, but average Americans handle elections like the baseball match and they're using to vote for "their team". These people don't care very much, who is actual leader of republicans and they're preemptively immune against arguments of the other side. They're choosing their leaders in similar way, like they're choosing iPhone - not because of it's actual functionality, but because it represents certain label. And believe it or not, the number of such people in American population is very high.

All those who want to work have left the state leaving a majority union/socialist population.

"The revelation by the US Census that Detroit's population declined by 25 percent in just ten years, from 2000 to 2010, is a stark expression of the crisis and decay of American capitalism."

Of course the socialists have it backward. MI has been a socialist state for many years with the 'liberal' Granholm and the corrupt, 'liberal' (sorry, being redundant) mayor of Detroit.

OK now about Obama, how about he releases his medical record just like every other president has. what is he hiding?

Ok how about Obama releases his school records, just like every other president has. What is he hiding?

ah well, the MSM is doing a great job at vetting Romney, only problem is, they have yet to VET Obama.

For a name like "freethinking" you sure are ignorant as fark. How about his BC? I'll bet you are still biatching about it being a fake too, huh?

It won't matter what you folks think anyway since Obama will probably win this thing going away. 18k people showed up in Wisconsin today for Obama while Romney had 650 folks at his meet-up in California. And he charged $35 bucks just to hear him speak.

While we're on the subject of Rmoney, why is it that you folks NEVER mention anything good about your nominee? Strange that you think he'll win when even y'all can't find anything good about him. It's almost as if his supporters hate him as much as the liberals. How can you expect to beat Obama by just complaing about his policies and never mentioning your own guys "good points." Could it be that maybe he just doesn't have any.

And before you go off about "another" liberal, you should know that I've probably voted for Republicans for longer than you've been alive. HaHaHaHaHaHaHa

Yes, in a venue that seats 5,000 max. So not only does the LightWorker personally control the sea level and the health of Gaia, he can now fit 18K people into 5K seats.

Oh, wait...

Hasn't it been reported right here on this very site that the sea level is up, like, you know, 72 feet or something since The Won won? He must have been too busy working on his short game, or bankrupting the coal industry, or unconstitionally bypassing Congress' authority with executive orders, or lying about some movie no one had ever seen to distract from the security lapses that cost an ambassador his life, or lying about the fantastically successful ObamaMotors, or lying about ObamaCare not adding a dime to the deficit or covering illegals, to bother with the sea level.

But, once he's re-Immaculated, he'll have more flexibility and I'm sure he'll wave his hand and lower the waters forthwith.

Geo, your a Republican idiot ;) The media will ALWAYS report honestly about their Hero god king great leader, http://www.breitb...or-Obama

Of course they ask him hard questions, such as does he want ice in his water.

It's Romney breaking the law and not filing taxes that they talk about. Never mind he did pay taxes, they need to remind everyone Romney broke the law and didn't pay or file taxes.

Everyone knows if the media reported fairly, Obama's approval rating would be 5%, so that is why they lie, cover up gun deals, a pedophile being put in charge of the Dept of Education, communists, ex (or not so ex) terrorist being his friends, Rev. Write...

Media being an arm of the Democrats, naaa, only an idiot wouldn't believe that.

And Paul Ryan arresting seniors while giving speeches about how he will steal their social security and health for some banksters is priceless! Now that we are in the last few weeks of the election. I am praying that nothing happens or threatens to happen to Obama or Romney.

Also, for conservatives to win, we need to win by a landside. If it is close, you will see the the most election fraud ever seen. If anyone thinks the media would report how democrats stole the election, you also would also believe that they are un-biased. If you believe union thugs or black panthers, or occupy wallstreet, acorn, or others democratic operatives just want a fair vote, you believe that the Muslim Brotherhood wants Isreal to exist.

This election is the most important and dangerous election ever. Lets pray for the safety of all involved. I make no bones about it, I want Obama out, but I want him voted out safely and him only to be known as the worst president ever. Any other outcome would end very badly for the USA.

Where are all the independent women? I thought feminism was supposed to create independent women so why do so many women support Obama who has demonstrated he wants to make women dependent upon him?
These women remind me of those battered women who refuse to leave their abusers.
Face it women, too many of you LIKE being dependent upon men.
