Google picks Chile for its Latin America servers

Sep 06, 2012

(AP)—Google Inc. has chosen a site just outside the capital of Chile for its first data center in Latin America.

The $150 million project will house capable of storing vast amounts of information.

It's a win for Chile, which has campaigned to attract high-tech businesses in recent years. Google says it picked the site in suburban Quilicura because of the skilled workforce and infrastructure and business-friendly regulatory environment.

Once built, the data center will employ just 20 people—a few skilled computer technicians as well as security personnel, to make sure nothing stops the computers from humming along.
