Google in deal with French groups over 'Jew' suggestion

Jun 27, 2012
Google has reached a deal with French anti-racism groups which objected to the search engine suggesting users add "Jew" to searches for famous names. Google's autocomplete feature suggests what people might want based on algorithms of previous searches. Because users of Google.fr often ask whether celebrities are Jewish or not, the word "Jew" in French is frequently suggested.

Internet search giant Google has reached a deal under legal mediation with French anti-racism groups which objected to the search engine suggesting users add "Jew" to searches for prominent names.

Both sides confirmed the deal had been reached for the groups to drop a legal complaint against Google but refused to comment on its specifics.

The conflict stemmed from Google's autocomplete feature that suggests what search people might want based on algorithms of previous searches.

Because users of Google.fr frequently ask whether politicians, actors or other celebrities are Jewish or not, the word "Jew" in French is frequently suggested as a possible result.

Six groups, including SOS Racisme, the Movement against and for Friendship between Peoples (MRAP), the International League Against Racism and anti-Semitism (LICRA) and Memoire 2000 argued that Google was unintentionally breaking the law.

Google users "are confronted daily by the unsolicited and almost systematic association of the word 'Jew' with the names of the best-known people in the world of politics, the media or business," the groups said.

Under French law, it is illegal to record someone's in a database.

Searches conducted on Google.fr, including for example for President Francois Hollande, continued to offer the word "Jew" as a top suggestion on Wednesday.

Bernard Jouanneau, a lawyer for Memoire 2000, said the deal "identified areas of useful cooperation in the fight against racism and anti-Semitism that put an end to the dispute."

Google also refused to comment on the specifics of the deal, but said it would be working with the anti-racism groups on public education projects.

"Google supports education and information against racism and anti-Semitism," a France spokesman said.

"Together with the associations, we will develop and promote projects aimed at increasing the awareness of to values of tolerance and respect."

Are Jewish people not proud of their heritage? Are they ashamed of being a Jew? Why only for Jews? How about American? French? Homosexual? The list goes on. So why the Jew label only?

I am so sick of everything having to be politically correct that you cannot ask a basic question without being judged as racist or intolerant.

I am white and grew as the minority in a school system with mostly Hispanic and some blacks. People of all races were my friends and still are, including some Jews. We are all people. No one race is better than the other. But trying to force people into the way of thinking of the French regarding Google is only going to make things worse and not better.

The censorship and restriction of the public opinion is politically incorrect as well. The fighters against racisms should judge their stances better next time, or they could be censored later by the very same logics.

The ethnicity of jews is problematic. The myth that they are one people from one location who believe in one set of beliefs and share a common culture, is deftly disassembled by dr shlomo sand of tel aviv university.

-He and many others claim for instance that ashkenazi euro jews did not originate in palestine but khazaria. Their ancestors never set foot in the holy land and so cannot claim any right to it, despite what the israeli 'constitution' and the torah says.

France is so quick to censor at the expense of freedom of expression because it is as full of nationalists as germany is. But their stance only serves to perpetuate the zionist myth of the jewish people as a single entity with some intrinsic right to a biblical holy land.

..Jewish people as a single entity with some intrinsic right to a biblical holy land..
Didn't they originate from there? With such logics we could ask some land in Japan, because the Japanese have "no intrinsic right" to it. Not to say about Americans, who moved into USA under rather controversial situation.

You should watch dr sands entertaining lecture or read his book. Judaism spread around the mediterranean largely through proselytism. The diaspora mostly never occured because it was a physical impossibility. The jews who were not slaughtered by the romans remained in palestine and eventually converted to islam.

Dr sand cites as evidence for this the fact that the mishnah was written in palestine.

"...the first major written redaction of the Jewish oral traditions called the "Oral Torah". It is also the first major work of Rabbinic Judaism. It was redacted 220 C.E by Rabbi Yehudah haNasi...a key leader of the Jewish community during the Roman occupation of Judea..."

The myth of a jewish people we are familiar with today was concocted by zionists during the 19th century, during the same period and for the same reasons as the myths of the german people or the russian people or the american people were fabricated.

"One nation under god, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." -The US is neither a nation nor indivisible, as it is regularly divided for any number of very Constructive and Beneficial reasons. Democracy and its evil twin capitalism cannot function without division and conflict.

The israeli people are being introduced to similar such dynamics as the primary Mission for which this garrison state and Bridgehead is being Retasked. Dr Sand speaks to this in his call for a single palestinian state.

The truth is in everyone's DNA. The Ashkenazim of caucasian Europe have no historic or ancestral ties, to the ancient Hebrews, and even the Jewish religion as practiced by the European Jews have very little similarities to the original Laws and religious rites and dogma of the original Hebrews.
The term "Jew" is derived from the Hebrew word, Jehudi. which literally means Judean. It is also taken from the division of the Hebraic country into 2 places, north and south. The subdivision Israel was in the north, and Judah was in the south. Jew and Judah, or Judaea are synonymous. Also, Judah was the fourth son of the patriarch, Jacob.

Jeez p/r/r/p once people know you cant be the RN you claim to be because you think hemoglobin carries glucose instead of O2, do you think they will believe anything you have to say?

This in addition to saying that no jew anywhere takes the OT stories literally? Go ahead and deny it so I can post a quote and make you look like a lying dumbass. Again. Oh and picts and their druid priests built stonehenge and bloodletting is used to treat leukemia and etcetc

There is nothing "antisemitic" about saying the word, "Jew". It's merely a descriptive word that denotes a follower of a certain religion and its practices. The French hysteria as to its use is undeniably ludicrous. Next thing you know, they will be insisting that the word, "frogs" is antifrench and should be banned from Google.

oh shut up, Blotto....you think you know about blood because you read a little item in Wiki. Glucose AND oxygen is carried in the blood...but the topic in that thread that you're referring to was about GLUCOSE..NOT OXYGEN..YOU IDIOT

And I NEVER said that NO Jew takes the bible literally....that's YOUR misinterpretation, as usual

I think you need to perform a service for this site. Perhaps keeping your opinions to yourself. You are a vitriolic troll. Anyone who reads your profile can immediately see your mincing of the words "liberal" and "socialist" like some right-wing pundit. You are an inflammatory individual who's opinions are a waste of the bytes they are stored on. Try expressing your opinion without being so insulting and perhaps you will be taken seriously occasionally. Be gone, Troll.

Blotto....are you AWARE that you are INCAPABLE of ABSORBING information and RETAINING THE TRUTH? So far, since you started following me from thread to thread, YOU HAVEN'T GOTTEN ONE THING RIGHT THAT I'VE SAID. INSTEAD, YOU MISQUOTE AND MISINTERPRET EVERYTHING I SAY, JUST SO YOU CAN HAVE A VICTIM TO SAY NASTY THINGS TO, AND TELL LIES ABOUT. I imagine that you have a long list of all your misinterpretations and misquotes without any regard for the truth...because you don't know what is true and what isn't true. You just want to be noticed. YOU want an audience. Well, I'm not your audience and most people in this website think you're a fool.
SO BUG OFF....FOOL.

If the lying dimwit sends me a PM I will just post it for everyone to see. Like I did when he/she sent me this one:

"So what is the REAL reason why you keep coming after me? Is it that you would like to make love to me. If I gave you my picture, you would probably cum all over yourself."

I do not want to have private conversations with this freak. Understandable yes?

I notice that certain people here have given Blotto a pass on destroying yet another thread with his lies and innuendos. But that's fine...I'll still say whatever I please. Blotto will most likely burst a blood vessel and that's fine too.

LOL...my boyfriend sent him that as a joke while I was cooking dinner. He still imagines it was me. Crazy person that Blootto is.

-And so we have an admission that this freak is at least 2 people posting as 1 sockpuppet, which we know pirouette and Ritchieguy did as well. And we know that neither is a nurse because they think red blood cells transport glucose, a mistake which no RN would make.

We can conclude therefore that anything this freak says is most likely a LIE.

The jewish powers that be run on the fear of being called anti-Semitic.

There is only one reason for them to fear being called jewish. TO HIDE THEIR EVIL DOINGS.

Besides that, most "jews" are not even jewish but european.

The thing is while this is a perfectly innocent search algorhythm based upon statistics, the french government must be thinking that there apparently is a number of less innocent people on the net searching for a group of bankers/politicians to blame for the missing euros and why french are in afghanistan and therefor freedom of search must be suspended in fear of other casual surfers getting caught in the hype , leading to a wichhunt. Am i right or am i right?

I suspect its more a reaction to world war 2, much the same as Germany's refusal to recognize cults as religions. Neither of those countries want a repeat of that war. Or rather the types of actions that went on behind the scenes during the war.

You people listen: "Jew" is a holy word, on the same level as The Name of The Lord. You should never invoke it carelessly nor blasphemously in mundane circumstances such as Google Searches. Try adding "circumcised cattle branding" to your searches instead.
