European broadcasters to bid for .radio domain name
The European Broadcasting Union said Thursday that it would apply to acquire the .radio domain name for the radio community.
"The EBU wants to ensure that the world's radio community has fair, reasonable access to a domain name that could bring unique impetus to the entire sector," EBU director general Ingrid Deltenre said.
"The EBU would administer the .radio top level domain name in a neutral, reliable and not-for-profit way. It would be regrettable if it fell into hands that do not represent the entire radio community," she added.
There are currently 21 top level domain names with the most commonly used including .com, .org and .net.
In addition, there are national domain names such as .fr for France and .de for Germany.
The world authority that maintains and regulates web addresses is the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names & Numbers, which has invited applications for new domain names to be submitted by April 12, 2012.
The Geneva-based EBU groups 75 state and private broadcasters from 56 European countries.
