Japan collab transmits record data speeds on terahertz waves

(PhysOrg.com) -- Researchers from Japan-based semiconductor manufacturer Rohm, together with a team from Osaka University, have come up with a chip that, in experiments, has achieved a wireless data transmission speed of 1.5 gigabits per second. This is a record breaker as the world's first terahertz wireless communication achieved with a small semiconductor device. The chip’s ability to transmit at such a quick speed is not the end of the story. Even higher transmission speeds of up to 30 Gbps may be possible in the future, according to reports.

Rohm's breakthrough, as described by DailyTech, involves the use of a micro-antenna that integrates the oscillation device and the detection element onto the semiconductor baseplate.

The company hopes to start mass-producing the chip in three to four years.

The experiment is also attracting attention because the Rohm and Osaka University researchers are using waves, a part of the electromagnetic spectrum under active exploration in technology circles. This is the first time that Terahertz frequency is being used in a of such a small size for data transmission. Production of this chip would come at an attractively low price as well, estimated at US $1.30 per module, according to reports. Oscillation and detection devices that can be used in a terahertz band are said to be presently generally large and expensive. “The equipment needed to operate in those heights is large and expensive, but give a bandwidth of 0.1Gbps. This was top of the line until Rohm Semiconductors came out of nowhere touting speeds of 1.5Gbps in the 300GHz band,” said one impressed tech blog.

The 2cm by 1cm device, with an integrated antenna adapter, is the smallest ever made for this level of . Future interest will similarly focus on possibilities of achieving small, simple consumer devices that can be used in a terahertz band.

“Research into terahertz technology utilising Terahertz frequency (100GHz-10THz) is now receiving increasing attention around the world,” according to an Osaka University publication, and devices exploiting the waveband are set to become increasingly important in a wide range of applications.

One limitation on terahertz equipment has said to be its suitability only for indoor applications due to its vulnerability to interference from the atmosphere.

There are such politicians, except people tend not to for them. A politician as such, by definition, won't lie through his teeth to win an election, thus he can never match the unrealistic promises of other candidates. Democracy, like everything else, is shaped by cause and effect. If people vote for liars, then politicians become liars. If people vote for well-meaning, intelligent and insightful politicians--well then politicians become well-meaning, intelligent and insightful. Still we are in no position to tell people what they should and shouldn't want, what is or isn't right. The only person in this world who truly thinks and feels like you is you. People tend to forget that.

THz frequencies are in the infrared radiation spectrum from about 3 THz upwards. You start to get the same problem as with optical communication: it doesn't go through objects, so the range of the wireless network is severely limited because the reciever literally needs a line-of-sight to the transmitter, or at least a very good reflection from a wall or something.

Americans like the Objectivist Tard spend their days dreaming up excuses for why their own Conservative Ideology has not been instrumental in destroying their own nation.

In this instance their core belief in free markets has caused the transfer of most of America's manufacturing sector, and virtually all of it's electronic sector to low wage nations with high levels of education.

Their argument was that Americans - because of their superior intelligence - would be capable of competing against low wave labour. It was obvious from the outset that this was false, and yet they persisted in promoting these free market policies even to this day - keeping what were American jobs in countries like China and Malasia.

I'm not American. I'm not conservative. The number of objectivists in America, and the rest of the world for that matter, are minimal. That's a lot of incorrect assumptions in one post.

One simply can't force jobs to stay within a nation. One might be able to prolong the international economical imbalance (which you are advocating for with you protectionist nonsense), while keeping other nations in poverty simply because their citizens happened to be born within the borders of their nation, and not because they are any less productive or prone to be so. You'd much rather prefer to live in western luxury, undeservedly, while others make an exponentially higher effort and get paid a mere fraction of your salary. Wake up kid. We can't all live like kings, and I don't see why it is, in your mind, fair for many Americans or Europeans whom don't deserve it to do so, while so many people around the world never even get the chance to prove themselves. Your patriotism disgusts me.

It seems you are not being as 'objective' as you might think you are being.

The point is that these other nations use practically 'slave labour' in many guises. Be these money slaves or political slaves.

Remember, the pay rates are negligible there compared to the Western Democracies, hence any 'competition' is based on UNEQUAL returns to the WORKER in these countries where pollution, wages and conditions etc do not compare.

So your lauding of those countries situation regarding worker/wages etc is NOT 'objective', since you fail to take into account the inequlities and unfair advantages those other 'cheaper/nastier' political systems depend on for their competitiveness.

How about we PAY those workers a PROPER wage and enforce good environmental/social justice laws etc, and THEN see just how they would compete with US et al on that 'level playing field', eh?

Let's see ALL sides of this issue. Let's avoid apparent ideologically-based conclusions, eh?

Furthermore economical balance does not happen overnight, and these wages are not "slave wages." These wages are adjusted to the market and they keep increasing as the nations wealth increases. China, among other nations, have seen huge improvements on living standards these past 20 years. This is a direct result of the free market.
And what do you mean by "... THEN see just how they would compete with US...?" What's wrong with you? Why are you so keen to see other nations fail? They have lower salaries for this exact reason, so that they don't fail in competing with the US. As they export goods their GDP increases, which in turn leads to an increase in wealth; money that they later on use to invest in e.g. education and healthcare. This is exactly what has happened in China the past 20 years. You should read a bit about economics.

There's use for this indoors. Imagine a 16x better than HD resolution screen 3 meters wide, and you want to show your holiday videos from your equally 16xHD phone.

Also, the limited range means less interference from your neighbors.

HD is actually a step back from the standards that already existed in analog formats at the time it was introduced to the market. Analog computer monitors for example had vastly better resolutions, but since flat panels were too expensive to produce in these very high resolutions and there was no demand for it on the television front, the whole market kinda converged. Televisions went upwards from standard to HD and computer monitors went downwards from the state of the art ten years ago to modern day "High Definition".

Because everything is so small signals received will also be small. They will have to be enhanced with some kind of array of chips, a 16x16 array will boost the price to over $300 but give a 24 dB boost in signal too. But really where can you buy a $1.30 InP chip?

This technology could be used for a radar capability as well as the faster that bit rate, the better the resolution in range.
