Robots play soccer, make breakfast at the RoboCup German Open 2011 (w/ video)

(PhysOrg.com) -- The RoboCup German Open 2011 came to a close on April 3rd, in Magdeburg, Germany.

For those of you who are not familiar with the event, it is a game of soccer for robots. The robots, who are about half the size of a normal human or smaller, were playing a game of soccer.

The eventual goal of the project is to create a team of super soccer robots, who are capable of beating the best players in the world. Of course, that goal is a long way off, but then again a few decades ago, the idea of a computer beating a chess grandmaster seemed to be impossible. As we all know, that happened.

Of course, since robots that play soccer have a very limited range of occupational duties, and they are human like in ability, the robots can do more than simply play a mean game of soccer. One of the official competitions that showed some promising results was Robo Cup at Home. This competition shows off how robots can help you out around the house.

Two of the robots got together to create a duet of breakfast. OK, to be more honest the two bots, Dynamaid and Cosero, essentially poured cereal and milk, but if I can call it making breakfast when I do it, I guess we can give a robot the same leeway. Both Dynamaid and Cosero are from Team NimbRo at the University of Bonn.

The creators of the tournament are hoping that these bots can best the best of human players by the year 2050, but you never know, robo-leagues could be sprouting up all over long before then.
