No decline in US abortion rate

Jan 11, 2011

The number of abortions in the United States stayed at about the same level in 2008 as three years earlier, leveling off after a long period of decline, a survey said on Tuesday.

Meanwhile the percentage of abortions that took place via drugs approved by the government in 2000 rose from 14 to 17 percent of all such procedures, according to data released by the Guttmacher Institute.

The total number of abortions in the United States in 2008 was 1.21 million, about the same as in 2005, when the institute issued its most recent report.

The 2008 rate of 19.6 abortions per 1,000 women ages 15-44 closely matches the 2005 rate of 19.4 abortions.

However researchers noted that the current levels are far below the peak in 1981 of 29.3 abortions per thousand women.

Karen Pazol of the Centers of Disease Control said government surveys of 2006 data released in 2009 showed similar results, "an interruption of the long-term decline."

However since the CDC does not have data for 2007 or 2008 she "can't predict whether it's a short-term change or a interruption of a long-term decline."

A combination of pills containing mifepristone and misoprostol, known as early medication , rose slightly compared to 2005.

The option is available in 59 percent of the nation's abortion clinics, the Guttmacher Institute said.

Meanwhile, abortion providers reported an increase in harassment: 89 percent compared to 82 percent in 2000.

Picketing was the most common form of harassment, reported by 55 percent of providers, followed by picketing combined with blocking patient access to facilities (21 percent), the institute said.

What happened to these poor babies "right to life," as outlined in our nation's founding documents?

If you project this across a decade, then basicly 19% of reproductive aged women in America are murderers of their own children, though if we adjust for repeat-offenders, that might be down to some 10% to 15%.

I don't know how these people can live with themselves.

How are these people any different than that madman who gunned down 20 people on saturday?

They are even more evil, because they are allegedly "sane," and did this anyway.

The NAZIs killed 6 million Jews and gypsies, not to mention all the other allied casualties.

Since then, America has killed 60 million of it's own babies as a matter of "choice" and "convenience".

Queue a stream of leftist lunatics who will now say, "it's not a baby, it's just a clump of cells."

While they will defend a fricken whale to the death, they have no reservations about slaughtering half of an entire generation of human beings.

-Uh was that a humpback whale QC?

-If you religionist 'us firsters' really wanted to reduce the abortion rate, youd acknowledge the true cause of, and necessity for, abortion; The fact that, because all religions insist that the world be full of THEM and nobody else, the world is chronically too full.

Western cultures have reduced their indigenous birthrates by giving citizens worthwhile alternatives to nonstop baby-making. But the third worlders forced to emigrate because of the strife and poverty in their own countries, which is CAUSED by religion-mandated aggressive repro rates, are negating this progress.

You want to reduce the need for abortion worldwide, which stands at ONE BILLION and counting since the beginning of the 1900s? Give up your religion. Tell the world that you do not ascribe to the selfish belief that your group, or ANY group, should have any more right to be here than anyone else, no matter what they believe in.

Renounce your belief in god, and tell others you have done this. Discard the belief that there is a deity who will grant you special favors just because you choose to praise him in a certain way. Tell them you understand that religion is the CAUSE of, and not the solution to, all of the worlds problems; if not directly, then indirectly in how it hinders progress and discourages the spread of Reason and understanding.

"It is estimated here that, as of 2008, about 28% of U.S. women ages 15-64 have had abortions. This figure has risen from 2.8% in 1973 to 11% in 1980, 19% in 1987, 24% in 1994, and 27% in 2001. In 2008, of women ages 40-55, about 40% have had abortions in their lifetimes."

-Obviously, anti-abortion tactics are having NO effect whatsoever on the problem because they fail to address the source of it. Anti-abortionists should be picketing houses of worship for causing, either directly or indirectly, the only choice many countries are left with: to either legalize abortion, or suffer the strife and misery of unemployment, starvation, civil unrest, and war.

As you can see, legalized abortion is the more humane alternative when these 2 choices are the only ones countries HAVE, because of religion-induced overreproduction. Help end the scourge QC. Do your part. GIVE UP GOD.

QC you're whole argument is based on religious philosophy, therefore it is invalid in the real world. Add to this the fact that in nature 70% of all fertilized eggs do not survive and you really just sound like a religious zealot ignoring facts (again). Please, for the love of science, rant somewhere else.

Otto, you evil, lying bastard, there is no need for abortion anywhere.

The planet is not over populated. We have so much extra farm land that half the farm land in the word is used to raise poisons like tobacco and other drugs, and 40% of Americans and Europeans already eat far too much.

You want to blame "religion" for the world's troubles, and yet those nations who have the highest proportion of professing Christians also have the highest productivity of food and medicine, and the LEAST amount of starvation, disease, and malnutrition.

I guess you just dn't like things like, well, facts.

QC, you evil, lying bastard, Youre right. Like I said, we can choose to live with the current pop growth rate without abortion, and suffer the strife and misery of unemployment, starvation, civil unrest, and war.

Without abortion we risk losing everything. With abortion we have the chance to rid the earth of the primary need for it.

"God blessed them:
"Prosper! Reproduce! Fill Earth! Take charge!" -gen1:26-28

-We're taking charge. Abortion is there because it is the only option you religionists have left us with. The blood of those babies is on YOUR selfish greedy hands.

Do some arithmetic. I know your god taught david not to count heads but neither ever existed anyways. Figure it out for yourself... with the clear understanding that GOD is not there to provide for however many babies you think youre supposed to produce. Hes not. You will all just have to learn to live within your means, and alongside everybody else.

Yeah its always the other religions, never your own. Your god is the GOOD one, I know. Youre ALL culpable. Your religion gives others the excuse to try to outreproduce you, and vice versa. Religions mean there will ALWAYS be conflict, sooner or later, somewhere. Right now coptic xians in egypt are playing martyrs because YOU and other good xians like yourself are telling them by your behaviors thats its ok to do so. People are suffering, innocent children are dying, because of YOUR GOD.

You take a snapshot in time and expect that to negate all of history? What was and is is yet to come. Its in your BOOK. It needs to END.

We have so much extra farm land
Maybe you dont understand the ramifications of the equation. Know how a virus from one sick person can infect an unlimited number? Life can increase geometrically. 2-4-8-16-32 etc. Add to this the fact that life always produces more of itself than can be expected to survive to maturity. That means when a niche is full, there will still be an excess which will fall to predation, disease, accident, etc. Mankind has disrupted this equation.

Add these 2 equations together and it means that your farmland could be gone in a generation, if humans would do all they could to redistribute populations, build infrastructure, adjust economies, etc. And then you would be faced IMMEDIATELY with a more explosive condition as pops continued to grow faster than they could be accomodated. It has ALWAYS been this way; ever since the advent of agriculture. Religions could make conflict manageable, which is why they were invented.

1. An article appears; 2. Religionists show up and spout poop because they think they are doing good; 3. Others show up to do battle because they also think they are doing good; 4. Somebody somewhere learns something new about this important struggle; 5. People enjoy themselves; 6. Physsorg gets lots of traffic.

If you post normal comments they may get responded to normally; or not.

You're probably right Otto, I'm being overly idealistic about it.
Well mannered discourse doesn't bring in the ratings like a good flame war. Hell, I'm not immune either..
It does get frustrating though. These are important-sensitive issues. Wish they were handled a bit more maturely.

But I digress. Bring the fire! It's cold today.

And one of the reasons for these lands of plenty is that they also have among the highest abortion rates in the world.

CC: If you do not believe it check out the abortion rates in third world and Muslim countries.

Texas has a land area of nearly 268,000 sq/miles.
The population of the world in nearly 7 billion.
That would be nearly 26,000 people per square mile. Which is about 40 people per acre. Where would they go during a flood?
That is not the kind of world I would want to live in. Personally I think we have more than enough people in the world right now.
What we need is more whales.

Yes, for a few hours perhaps... although after a week or 2 most of them would be dead.
Also, I dare you to say out loud: "OK GOD IF YOU'RE REAL, SHOW ME TODAY!" And mean it - if you have the nerve to do so.
I have already- and I meant it. The lightening bolt missed me by THAT MUCH.

I dare You to say out loud, and with sincerity: "There is no god but god and muhammud is his prophet!" Say it in the presence of some muslims. If you are a true xian in your heart, god will know this and negate the contract. The muslims may not be quite so understanding however.

Usually I myself get as far as "There is no god" and find that wholly sufficient. Why dont you try that one some time? If you are a true xian in your heart, god will know this and refrain from zapping you.

"...and yet those nations who have the highest proportion of professing Christians also have the highest productivity of food and medicine, and the LEAST amount of starvation, disease, and malnutrition."

This is completely untrue.

Gutamela has the 2nd highest death rate from Malnutrition and is a predominantly christian nation.

Bolivia is number 5 on death rate from Malnutiriton and is also a christian nation.

How about the Democratic Republic of the Congo (another mostly christian nation) where more than 37 million of the population live with malnutrition.

Boznia, Botswana, burundi, not exactly nations known for their food production, medicine or their low preventable death rates... and that's just 3 from a list of many countries who's population are christian where malnutrition, starvation, and disease run rampant.

Regardless of your beliefs on the abortion issue, you should really check your facts, lest someone realize you're just makin' stuff up.

Also, I dare you to say out loud: "OK GOD IF YOU'RE REAL, SHOW ME TODAY!" And mean it - if you have the nerve to do so.
What sane person walks around holding conversations with imaginary characters?

Besides, an omnipotent and omniscient being (such as your favorite variety of Ghost) would already know what you're thinking and/or wishing, without any need on your part to shape any sound waves with your larynx and mouth.

And honestly, how can anyone truly "mean it", other than already having had their brain rotted through with superstitious lunacy to begin with? I challenge you to walk out on the street, and exclaim to the heavens (WITHOUT breaking down in giggles): "Tinkerbell, show yourself, or I'll say out loud that I don't believe in fairies!" -- and MEAN IT (if you have "the nerve" to do so...)

They didn't seem too concerned about their lives when they were born with dark skin or female parts. Our nations founding document were concerned with the welfare of white, land owning males( guys like me!)So, as you can see, the founding documents are doing quite well, as are their intended benefactors, white land owning males.
