Dell acquires 'cloud' computing services company Boomi

US computer giant Dell announced Tuesday that it has acquired Boomi, a company that provides Web-based or "cloud" computing services.

Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed.

The Texas-based Dell said the purchase of Berwyn, Pennsylvania-based Boomi will allow it to "help businesses reap the full value of ," where software or services are hosted on the Web and available on demand.

Boomi operates a platform that allows transfers of data between cloud-based applications and "on-premise" .

Dell said Boomi "manages millions of transactions a month and has completed tens of thousands of cloud integrations for hundreds of customers globally across a wide spectrum of industries."

Dell said the acquisition is its latest bid to "build a technology portfolio for growing businesses seeking the benefits of Web-based computing."

"Twenty-six years ago we helped accelerate the move to client-server computing; today we'll help drive a similar transformation with customers turning to the cloud to drive costs down and innovation up," said Steve Felice, president of Dell's consumer, small and medium business division.

in September lost out to rival US computer giant Hewlett-Packard in a bidding war for company 3PAR, whose technology enables large companies and government agencies to shift to "cloud" storage platforms.
