In Brief: China to hold key 3G technology forum

China will host an international forum next month on the technical standards for the nation's third-generation wireless communications network.

The event will focus on the standards that companies will be required to adhere to in China's huge wireless market for years to come. China's homegrown TD-SCDMA technology is expected to be the standard; however, it is considered not quite ready enough for Beijing to issue commercial 3G licenses.

The First Forum of China Mobile Phone Technology Development will take place Aug. 10-11 in the southwestern Chinese city of Guilin, the Xinhua news service said Thursday. It is sponsored by the non-government Mobile Multimedia Technology Alliance.
