Briefs: Brasil Telecom beefing up broadband net

Brasil Telecom is upgrading its broadband service to handle multimedia offerings in three regions of the country.

Lucent said Friday it had been contracted by Brasil Telecom to deploy its MiLife platform so that Voice over Internet Protocol and other broadband features can be launched in the Brasilia, Sao Paulo and Curitiba regions.

MiLife incorporates elements of Lucent's IP Multimedia Subsystems solutions, which the company said accelerates the introduction of new broadband services over existing wired and wireless infrastructure.

Brasil Telecom has leveraged its base of nearly 11 million landline subscribers to become one of the largest broadband providers in Latin America.
