Huawei teams with Econet on Kiwi wireless

China's Huawei Technologies will join with Econet Wireless on a third-generation network project in Auckland, New Zealand, it was announced Monday.

The project marks Huawei's entrée into the Australia-New Zealand 3G wireless market after deploying telecom solutions and products to 22 other nations.

"Huawei, as the sole vendor, will start the first deployment phase in Auckland ... and target to complete the nationwide networks within the next 3 years," Huawei said in a news release.

Huawei provides end-to-end WCDMA (wideband code division multiple access) base stations and other equipment as well as a menu of 3G solutions.

The project is also the first 3G venture for Econet and its parent company, EWG, which has extensive experience with wireless infrastructure in Africa.
