Internet renovation is planned

The National Science Foundation is planning to re-engineer the Internet so it will function optimally in the computerized world of the next decade.

The new project -- the Global Environment for Networking Investigations -- was announced last week during a technical meeting in Philadelphia, The New York Times reported.

The, as-yet-unfunded project may cost more than $300 million.

Among other things, the new Internet would provide significantly improved security. Scientists note than when the current Internet was designed during the 1970's, security was not an important consideration, the Times said.
