Defense has Internet transition plan

June 30, 2005

The U.S. Defense Department is the only government agency that has put together a plan for switching to the next generation Internet, reports.

The switch to Internet Protocol version 6 is supposed to be completed by 2008. It will greatly expand the number of IP addresses and improve security, data routing and service.

Currently, most computers are running on IPv4.

The Government Accountability Office has said many government computers already run software capable of running on the new internet protocol.

"The government transition has been slow," said David Powner, the GAO's director of information technology management issues.

CNetNews said the Department of Defense has already submitted an internet protocol transition plan and hopes to track personnel with it.
