Fujitsu announced 100GB 2.5-inch SATA hard disk drive

Fujitsu Computer Products of America, Inc., one of the world's leading suppliers of hard disk drives and computer peripherals and the first hard disk drive manufacturer to introduce a 2.5" Serial ATA (SATA) hard disk drive, today announced its 100GB 2.5" SATA hard disk drive. Following more than four years of SATA development on the reduced 2.5" platform, the latest Fujitsu mobile hard disk drive maximizes Native Command Queuing (NCQ) performance, offers low power consumption, higher shock tolerance, quiet operation, and complies with the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) standards.

In January 2004, Fujitsu announced the industry's first and only 2.5" SATA hard disk drive, a move that redefined the possibilities for manufacturers in emerging notebook, enterprise storage and consumer electronics markets. The Fujitsu MHV2100BH series hard disk drive features a hardware accelerator that maximizes NCQ performance, an important feature that enables the hard disk drive controller to intelligently and simultaneously queue and reorder up to 32 instructions, resulting in a significant improvement in overall hard disk drive performance. Moreover, the 100GB 2.5" SATA drive reduces power consumption, making it equivalent to traditional parallel ATA hard disk drives with quiet operation and RoHS compliance.

"2.5" SATA hard disk drives are driving innovation in the mobile platform, near-line enterprise and consumer electronics markets. Fujitsu's expertise and history with this platform ensures that our partners and customers can invest and build these exciting new applications," said Joel Hagberg, vice president, Marketing and Business Development, Fujitsu Computer Products of America. "We will continue to work closely with other storage leaders to identify new opportunities for the 2.5" SATA platform and do our part to increase performance and fuel product development."

Additionally, Fujitsu announced its new MHV2080BS and MHV2080AS series hard disk drives, Extended Duty configurations of its already rugged 2.5" SATA and PATA hard disk drive families. Fujitsu sees these extended duty models as one answer to the ongoing battle for improved durability, low power consumption, and near-silent operation. With up to 80GB of capacity, the new hard disk drives offer ample storage for multimedia presentations, digital audio and video, and graphics with the ability to function flawlessly 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. As a result, they are particularity well suited for advanced storage requirements, including blade servers, network routers and POS applications.
