Trend Micro Offers New Mobile Security

Trend Micro, Inc., a leader in network antivirus and Internet content security software and services, today announced the availability of Trend Micro Mobile Security, providing antivirus and anti-spam protection for SMS messaging customers using data-centric mobile phones and PDAs.

Trend Micro Mobile Security is designed to protect data-centric mobile devices such as smartphones against viruses and short message service (SMS) spam. The integrated solution provides automatic, real-time scanning to protect wireless devices against malicious code and viruses on the Web or hidden inside files.

As the number of data-centric mobile devices grows, industry analysts expect them to become an attractive target for virus writers. Mobile Security provides protection against emerging threats via a compact yet sophisticated scan engine that helps detect and block malicious code.

TrendLabs, Trend Micro's global network of antivirus research centers, identified in 2004 a number of proof-of-concept viruses for mobile phones, such as SYMBOS_SKULLS.A (a Trojan which targets Series 60 phones with the Symbian operating system, particularly Nokia 7610 models) and SYMBOS_CABIR.A (a worm which spreads through BLUETOOTH-enabled Series 60 phones); it is likely that further attacks on such devices will occur in the future.

With the arrival of the holiday season, many people will be purchasing or receiving new handhelds as gifts. With this in mind, Trend Micro is offering its customers a holiday gift, by providing this first edition of Trend Micro Mobile Security free of charge until June 2005.

Trend Micro Mobile Security is compatible with devices from a number of the most popular handset providers, such as the Motorola MPx220, the O2 XPhone, the Sagem myS-7 and the Orange SPV e200.

"Many people will put hi-tech gadgets, data-centric mobile phones and PDAs on their holiday gift wish list. As the number of people using the devices increases, so they become more enticing targets for virus writers," said Raimund Genes, President of EMEA Operations at Trend Micro. "By offering the first version of Trend Micro Mobile Security free of charge, Trend Micro wishes to provide its customers and their data-centric devices a secure holiday season."
