Korea Develops High-Resolution Satellite Camera

Korea has developed an ultra-resolution camera that can recognize a moving vehicle at an altitude of 685 kilometers above the ground, according to the Chosunilbo. The Korea Aerospace Research Institute said on Sunday that it has made a multi-spectral camera, or MSC, in conjunction with an Israel-based firm.

MSC refers to a high-end camera capable of taking two or more images of a scene at the same time, with each image taken in a different spectral band. The newly developed MSC, will go on board Korea's multi-purpose satellite Arirang II.

Arirang II is a lightweight Earth observation satellite developed by the Korea Aerospace Research Institute KARI. It will provide high-resolution images, of the Korean peninsula for the production of maps and digital elevation models, applications for which include land use planning and disaster and risk management.

Launch is planned for November 2005 from Russia.
