Philips launches new TFT LCD controller chip for next-generation flat displays

Royal Philips Electronics today announced a new thin-film-transistor (TFT) liquid crystal display (LCD) controller chip designed for use in next-generation LCD monitors and flat displays. As high-resolution LCDs quickly become the standard for home theater equipment and personal computing (PC) devices, manufacturers continue to look for high-performance, cost-effective solutions. Philips SAA6734AHL controller chip is packed with a variety of on-chip features on the industry's smallest footprint. It allows customers to quickly manufacture LCD monitors with high-quality video performance with a minimal number of components.

Boasting state-of-the-art integration levels and superior on-screen performance, the chip's integrated high-performance analog-to-digital conversions (ADC), scaler, on-screen-display (OSD), and low-voltage differential signaling (LVDS) panel interface provide customers with increased flexibility to meet a variety of vendor manufacturing specifications. An analog RGB VGA input is integrated on the chip and supports up to 165 MHz of pixel frequency. The solution supports input resolutions up to UXGA (1600 x 1200 pixels) and scales to fit panel resolutions up to SXGA (1280 x 1024 pixels).

"Philips continues to drive the digital display market by leading with highly-integrated system solutions," said Alois Kliner, general manager, Business Line Display Processing, Philips Semiconductors. "Our robust audio, video and scaling IP portfolio allows us to provide customers with advanced A/V technology for faster migration to high-resolution digital displays, including LCD monitors and television solutions."

To further reduce integration costs, the controller also includes a built-in Spread-Spectrum technology that minimizes electromagnetic interference to allow the use of a two-layer printed circuit board (PCB) design. Additionally, a complete reference design, including hardware and software for the SAA6734AHL is available to customers for design-in support.

Availability The SAA6734AHL controller is sampling now and scheduled for mass production in July 2004. Philips will be showcasing the new-generation SAA6734AHL at Computex 2004 (Taipei, Taiwan, June 1-5, 2004) at Philips Booth #T201A in Hall 4.
